Joining the MRG

There are a number of ways you can join the Mathematical Reasoning Group:

As a Visiting Researcher

We always welcome visits from PhD students or RAs interested in working with us, be it for a few days, weeks or months. Funding is sometimes available, e.g. under the calculemus project. Edinburgh is a great city to come and work in for a while, so if you'd like to arrange to visit, get in touch with the person in the group whose interests coincide with yours. You can find out about MRG members' research interests from their homepages.

As a Fourth Year Undergraduate or MSc student

Fourth year undergraduates and MSc students are always welcome to apply to do their project with a member of the MRG. Available 4th year projects are listed here, and MSc proposals are listed here, but you are also welcome to propose your own project if you have an idea someone in the MRG might be interested in. You can find out about MRG members research interests on the members homepages. Email the relevant person directly to arrange an informal discussion about taking up a project with us.

As a PhD Student

If you have an idea for a PhD project, and you think one of the senior members of the MRG might be interested in supervising you, your first step should be to email them directly. It's very helpful if you can come to visit the MRG for a day and talk to them face-to-face - you can arrange to talk to several possible supervisors about your ideas if that's appropriate. That will also allow you get an idea of the feel of the working environment and see if it would suit you. Consult the Edinburgh people page to find out about the research interests of MRG members and get their email addresses. Sometimes, you may find possible PhD projects they have proposed on their webpages. There is also the formal PhD application process for the School of Informatics and the University as a whole - start here for that.
